Reference Group

During the first year of the Take Part Pathfinder we convened a Reference Group quarterly to support the development of the Pathfinder Programme. (See Terms of Reference below.)

The first session, held in January 2009 used an evaluation tool called Dimensions of Community Empowerment to begin to develop the Pathfinder’s evaluation framework. Key priorities were agreed and some initial indicators discussed. At the second session some further work was done on developing indicators. Participants also had an opportunity to input their ideas about the buddying scheme for learning programme participants. The third session explored if structured dialogue could be an appropriate method to develop the joint dialogue sessions. The final session in December focussed on the theme of ‘recruitment’ to civic roles, buddying and the Voice and Echo training

Over the course of the meetings over 20 organisations were involved, and we are grateful for the time they gave and their contribution to the development and support of the Take Part Pathfinder. The organisations include West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Service, Dudley and Wolverhampton Primary Care Trusts, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton Councils, St Thomas’s Network and many more.

The Reference Group meetings helped to share programme activities, as we moved in to the final year of the programme we closed these sessions and invited colleagues to continue to be involved in the Pathfinder through the following activities:

• Facilitation Training – especially for using Voice and Echo
• Work on civic roles such as becoming a magistrate or a school governor
• Buddying opportunities linking people on our learning programme with buddies who can act as a source of support
• Round table events looking at peoples’ journeys to becoming active citizens
• An end of programme celebratory event.
